The QC Inspector / AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) supports fabrication, construction, maintenance, repair, and outage projects by performing welding and fabrication inspections and helping ensure work meets applicable Codes, specifications, drawings, procedures, and customer requirements. This role is also responsible for maintaining accurate quality documentation and coordinating activities with Code and Authorized Inspectors as needed.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on inspector who is comfortable working directly with welders, field supervision, engineering, customers, and Authorized Inspectors. This individual should possess strong technical knowledge of welding and fabrication requirements, along with the communication skills needed to interpret Code requirements and translate them into clear, practical guidance for personnel with varying levels of technical expertise.

Required Qualifications
  • Active AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification in accordance with AWS QC1.
  • Current/active Visual Acuity Examination, including Jaeger J-1 near-vision acuity, or ability to successfully complete required employer vision testing.
  • U.S. Citizen.
  • Working knowledge and practical experience with welding inspection, fabrication, construction, maintenance, and/or repair activities.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, weld symbols, P&IDs, isometric drawings, fabrication drawings, WPSs, PQRs, WPQs, material documentation, and applicable Code requirements.
  • Hands-on experience using common welding inspection equipment, including fillet weld gauges, bridge cam gauges, hi-lo gauges, pit/depth gauges, temperature measurement devices, measuring tapes, calipers, and other dimensional or visual inspection tools.
  • Experience developing and maintaining weld maps, weld tracking logs, inspection records, turnover packages, and other QC documentation.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Acrobat and/or Bluebeam Revu for drawing markups, weld mapping, document control, and completion/development of fillable PDF QC forms.
  • Ability to effectively document inspection findings, nonconformances, punch-list items, and required corrective actions.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Additional Code Experience

Experience with National Board "R" Stamp work, NBIC repair/alteration documentation, and Authorized Inspector (AI) coordination and workflows is highly desirable.
Candidates should be comfortable locating, reading, interpreting, and applying Code requirements and communicating those requirements in concise, understandable terms to craft personnel, supervision, project management, customers, and other stakeholders.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Perform visual inspection of welding and fabrication activities before, during, and after welding.
  • Verify applicable WPS requirements, including welding process, filler metal, preheat/interpass temperature, joint configuration, essential variables, and other applicable requirements.
  • Verify welder qualifications and continuity are appropriate for the work being performed.
  • Perform and document fit-up, in-process, final weld, dimensional, and visual inspections.
  • Develop and maintain accurate weld maps and weld tracking documentation.
  • Review drawings, specifications, Codes, procedures, inspection plans, and customer requirements to establish applicable inspection requirements.
  • Coordinate required NDE/NDT activities and review documentation for completeness and acceptance, as applicable.
  • Review material identification, traceability, MTRs/CMTRs, filler-metal controls, and related quality records.
  • Support hydrostatic/pneumatic testing, pressure testing, system turnover, and final documentation activities when applicable.
  • Coordinate with Authorized Inspectors for required hold points, inspections, Code documentation, repairs, alterations, and acceptance activities.
  • Maintain organized and complete QC records and assist with development of turnover packages and final quality documentation.
  • Perform daily jobsite quality and safety walks/audits and promptly communicate observed concerns to appropriate supervision.
  • Identify nonconforming conditions and work collaboratively with supervision, engineering, and Quality Management toward appropriate resolution.
  • Promote a strong quality culture through proactive communication, field presence, coaching, and professional interaction with craft personnel.

The ability to take a complex Code or technical requirement and explain the important information clearly, accurately, and concisely is essential.

Travel & Physical Requirements

  • Willingness and ability to travel throughout North America based on project needs, including outage, maintenance, new-construction, and fabrication assignments.
  • Ability to work in active industrial construction and fabrication environments while wearing required PPE.
  • Ability to walk and stand for extended periods throughout the workday.
  • Ability to climb stairs, ladders, scaffolding, and access elevated work areas when required and permitted.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, and position oneself as necessary to perform inspections.
  • Ability to access confined or restricted spaces, including boiler manways and other tight-access areas, when properly trained, authorized, and permitted under the applicable confined-space program.
  • Ability to work in varying environmental conditions commonly encountered at power-generation, industrial, fabrication, and construction sites.

Preferred Experience

Previous inspection experience involving power generation, boiler outages, pressure piping, industrial construction, fabrication shops, chemical/process facilities, natural-gas facilities, or heavy industrial maintenance is strongly preferred.

Experience working within an ASME/National Board Quality Control Program, including coordination with Authorized Inspectors and preparation of Code/NBIC documentation, is particularly valuable.
