Position Summary: The Assistant Payroll Manager will support the Payroll Manager in overseeing and supervising payroll operations. This role ensures that payroll is processed accurately, on time, and in compliance with government regulations and union contracts. The ideal candidate will bring strong payroll expertise, particularly in a unionized environment, and contribute to continuous process improvement within the department.
Duties and Responsibilities: • Accurately perform and reconcile payroll tax filings on a daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly basis. • Assist the Payroll Manager with year-end responsibilities, including the preparation and distribution of W-2 forms. • Enter and maintain garnishment records, ensuring compliance with all applicable state laws and requirements. • Independently manage the full weekly payroll cycle, from entering time to processing and final submission. • Serve as a backup for other payroll team members during absences or vacations. • Approve and process employee layoffs every third weekend, including both Saturday and Sunday. • Assist the Payroll Manager with daily payroll-related system postings. • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Skills and Abilities: • Extensive knowledge of payroll functions, including preparation, reconciliation, internal controls, and payroll taxes, particularly in a unionized environment. • Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail. • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities. • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Word) or similar tools. • Experienced in working with payroll software and systems.
